2013 Classes

 

Family Chocolate Class
Instructor: Jaclyn Stewart Wood
Date/Time: Saturday, February 18, 2pm-3:30pm
Fee: $10 per person; children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent.
Spend a great afternoon at the Seaport learning to make delicious chocolate candies!  We’ll be making molded chocolates, chocolate bark with mix-ins, and dipped treats. Pre-registration is required, call 609-296-8868 x 1001 to register.

Introduction to Acrylic Painting
Instructor: Elizabeth E. Paseler
Date/Time: Saturday, February 23, 2013, 10am-1pm
Fee: $45 members/ $55 nonmembers
Join artist Elizabeth Paseler for a new class at the Seaport– acrylic painting!  As Elizabeth states, “basic drawing & acrylic painting is flexible & fun! As a hobby, it’s easier, more forgiving & less expensive than oils or watercolor. This class is made for everyone & every skill level, whether you’ve tried every art & craft or consider yourself “all thumbs”! This is painting made EASY!!! Choose from a selection of local NJ themed projects. With step by step guidance & some shortcuts, you will really enjoy creating your own acrylic painting in just 3 hours! This class is great for anyone 12-112yrs old! All supplies included. Feel free to bring your own supplies, favorite brushes or a smock/workshirt.”

Heirloom Easter Basket Class
Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: Saturday, March 16, 2013      10am-4pm
Fee: $80 members/$90 nonmembers, includes materials fee
Get ready for Easter and make this your Easter tradition—join Mary May to weave her original 10” x 14” Traditional Easter basket.   Easter colors available, and this basket has a twined bottom and wrapped handle if time allows.  This class is ideal for beginners and more advanced weavers alike.  Pre-registration is required by March 10, 2013.

 

Pottery Made Simple
Instructor: Kat Francis
Dates/Times: Saturdays in April: April 6 from 10am-2pm, April 13 from 10am-12pm, April 20 from 10am-2pm, and April 27 from 10am-12pm
Fee: $75 members/ $85 nonmembers
Have you ever wondered how beautiful objects are created out of clay? In this class you will learn the easy slab method, how to wedge, make molds, impress and appliqué. You will form your own works of art that will be fired in the kiln, and you will learn a simple glazing method to apply to the pottery you made. Different glazes will be discussed and there will be a Q&A session in the last class to go over the techniques you have learned. Materials fee is included. Pre-registration is required by April 1, 2013.

Fish Carving Class
Instructor: Mark Bair
Date/Time: Saturday, April 6 and Saturday, April 13, 2013    10am-4pm
Fee: $120 members/ $135 nonmemers
In this two day class, Mark Bair will lead you in carving a Largemouth Bass.  Starting with a wood blank, you will be lead through carving, painting techniques, and a touch of metalsmithing with copper fins to bring your fish to life.  Pre-registration is required by April 1, 2013.

Board Shaping Class
Instructor: Randy Budd
Date/Time: Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14, 2013, 10am-5pm
Fee: $95 members/$110 nonmembers, includes materials fee
Get back to surfing’s original roots and shape your own Alaia with Randy Budd of Pine Knot Surfboards.  All materials, sage advice, and cool background music is included.  A suggested tool list will be provided with registration. This class is great for woodworkers looking for a great piece of art to hang on the wall or for surfers looking for a functional board to use at the beach! Pre-registration required by April 6, 2013.

Pound Fish Basket Class
Instructor: Mary May
Date/ Time: April 20, 2013 10am-4pm
Fee: Pricing is dependent on size of basket:  For 10” size: $70 members/$80 non-members; 12” size is $75 members/$85 nonmembers, and for 17” size, $95 members/$105 nonmembers; includes materials fee
Join Mary May to learn all about pound fishing and make your own replica pound fish basket, originally used in commercial fishing.  Basket can be made in various sizes depending on your weaving level– choose 10” beginner size, 12”, or 17” diameter for the more experienced weaver.  (Choose your size at sign-up time).  Pre-registration is required by April 13, 2013.

Long Island Tern Carving Class
Instructor: Nathaniel Kirby
Date/Time: April 20 and 27, 2013, 10am-5pm
Fee: $115 members/$125 nonmembers, includes materials fee for wood, paint and a steel museum-quality stand
Come out and carve a traditional Long Island Tern decoy with local carver Nathaniel Kirby.  In this two-day class we will use traditional hand tools to carve the shorebird decoy and then paint and distress it in a way that simulates a hunting lure of days of old. Students of any level of experience are welcome. Pre-registration is required by April 20.

For the Birds: Berry Baskets and Birdhouses

Date/Time:  May 18, 2013  2 classes: Berry Basket 10am-12pm and  Birdhouse 1pm-4pm
Fee: Berry Basket: $35 members/$40 nonmembers; Birdhouse: $45 members/$50 nonmembers  Sign up for both and save!  Fee for both classes is $60 for members/$70 for nonmembers
Join Mary May to make two baskets in one day!  Sign up for one, or stay for both!  Make a traditional South Jersey Berry Basket just in time for pickin’ your berries, break for lunch, and take the same skills you just learned to weave a bird house with a cedar roof and a round glass opening as entrance for the birds, perfect for your back yard! Pre-registration is required by May 11, 2013.

Bicycle Basket
Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time:  Saturday, June 15, 2013        10am-4pm
Fee: $80 members/ $90 nonmembers; includes materials fee
Get ready to bike ride in style with a basket that is both useful and fun to make!  This basket starts out rectangular and finishes oval at the top.  You will like the shaping skills used along with the supports built right into the sides of the walls for extra strength.  You’ll learn easy attachment strapping. Approximate size is 12 1/2” long by 8” high and 7” wide. Pre-registration is required by June 7, 2013.

July  Everyone is invited to join Mary on ~Weavin’ Tuesdays~ in the summer at the Seaport. This is for those unfinished baskets, show and tell, and just about anything baskets. If you have a current membership to the Seaport, or you’re a paid daily guest come join me on my volunteer Tuesdays starting at noon till 3pm and weave.

August  Everyone is invited to join Mary on ~Weavin’ Tuesdays~ in the summer at the Seaport. This is for those unfinished baskets, show and tell, and just about anything baskets. Candy Corn Basket Class
Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: October 12, 2013         10am-4pm
Fee:  $50 members/ $60 non-members, includes materials fee
Get ready for Halloween with Mary May! Make your own fall- themed basket with the bright colors and shape of candy corn!  We’ll be using a quick weave handle and finishing with a raffia bow.  If you have some silk fall leaves, bring them to class to add to the top.  Basket size is 10” long, 14” high, and 1” wide.  Pre-registration is required by October 5, 2012.

Old Salt Figure Carving
Instructor: Mark Bair
Date/Time: Saturday, September 7 & Saturday, September 14, 2013   10am-4pm
Fee: $95 members/ $110 nonmembers
Join Folk Carving Artist Mark Bair in carving his favorite subject, the folk figure.  Starting with a simple wood blank, you will be taught the techniques of figure carving.  You will finish your carving in paint and oil.  Pre-registration is required by September 1, 2013.

Santa Figure Carving
Instructor: Mark Bair
Date/Time:  Saturday, November 2 & Saturday, November 9, 2013   10am-4pm
Fee: $95 members/ $110 nonmembers
Join Folk Carving Artist Mark Bair in carving his favorite subject, the folk figure.  Starting with a simple wood blank, you will be taught the techniques of figure carving.  You will finish your carving in paint and oil, just in time for the holiday!  Pre-registration is required by October 25, 2013.

Shaker Basket Class
Instructor: Mary May
Date/ Time: November 9, 2013     10am-4pm
Fee: $80 members/ $90 nonmembers ($10 additional fee if keeping mold), includes materials fee
Join us for a special class using white oak weavers and a bonnet handle to make a timeless basket that will be cherished by all.  This beautiful 4” basket is woven over a mold, which you may borrow from Mary or purchase to keep for future use.  You’ll experience weaving on a mold and shaping is easy.  Pre-registration is required by September 14, 2013.

Christkindlmarkt Class:  Christmas Stocking Ornament
Instructor: Mary May
Date/Time: Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, 2013    Classes begin at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm
Fee: $15 members/ $20 nonmembers, materials fee of $7 per ornament due to instructor day of class
Join us during Christkindlmarkt for this great ornament class– a stocking that is cute, easy to make, and fun! Students can come for two hours and make one stocking, or stay all day and make more—great for decorating or to give as a gift!

Note from Mary: Please sign-up early; I need to prepare material, unlike past years weaving material will be hard to get in 2013. I may need to cancel classes if enrollment is low.  If you have a group that would like to make a basket, let the Seaport know, we can arrange a private class for your group.

 

 

Payment in full is required at time of registration. No refunds will be given. If you cancel in writing at least 48 hours prior to the first day of class, a credit will be issued for a Tuckerton Seaport purchase within one year. The Tuckerton Seaport reserves the right to make changes to instructors, programs, session dates and times.

Coal Basket Class Instructor: Mary May Date/ Time: January 19, 2013    10am-4pm Fee: $65 members/$75 nonmembers, includes materials fee Mary May found this historic basket one day while researching another New Jersey basket and has reproduced it for you to make!  Used to carry coal, this basket may be used as a wall piece or centerpiece on the table. The shape is reminiscent of a saucer for riding in the snow.  Pre-registration is required by January 12, 2013.

Whale Carving Class Instructor: Mark Bair Date/Time: Saturday, January 26 & Saturday, February 2, 2013   10am-4pm Fee: $120 members/ $135 nonmembers Carve your own piece of whaling history with Mark Bair in this two day class.  You will carve and paint a traditional Nantucket-style folk art sperm whale.  Beginning and advanced carvers welcome. Pre-registration is required by January 19, 2013.

 

Boat Building Skills Instructor: Ron Spodofora Date/Time: Saturdays and Sundays, February 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24, 2013 10am-4pm Fee:  $40 Members/ $45 non-members per day Join boat builder Ron Spodofora and other boat building staff for a series of one day hands-on workshops in Perrine’s Boatworks.  This class is designed for beginners and boat builders unfamiliar with regional Barnegat Bay boat building methods.  It is an introduction to traditional Barnegat Bay boat building tools and techniques, hand and power tools, shop safety and various boat designs of the region.  Participants will work with Tuckerton builder Ron Spodofora on one of the traditional boats being built in Perrine’s Boat works. Bring lunch and safety goggles.  Pre-registration required by the Wednesday before each class.

Super Bowl Sunday Class: Eel Trap Instructor: Mary May Date/Time: Sunday, February 3, 2012 10am-5pm Fee: $95 members/ $105 nonmembers, includes materials fee It’s an annual tradition—join Mary May for her popular Super Bowl Sunday basket class!  Join us to make a traditional woven eel trap. The cylander-shaped basket is 10” round at the bottom, 25 inches long, and 6” at the top with a cedar plug. Pre-registration is required by January 28, 2012.

Golden Eye Decoy Carving Class Instructor: Jode Hillman Date/Time: February 10 & 17, 2013        10am-5pm Fee: $140 members/$155 nonmembers Join Master Carver Jode Hillman for an intensive two day class in which students will learn the methods and techniques needed to carve and paint a Delaware River style goldeneye decoy.  Students may choose a hen or drake to carve and paint. Pre-registration required by February 3
