Spend a great afternoon at the Seaport learning to make delicious chocolate candies! We’ll be making molded chocolates, chocolate bark with mix-ins, and dipped treats. While the chocolate is setting, make your own homemade Valentines! Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent. Pre-registration is required by February 4, 2016.

Join Mary May for our annual tradition! In this workshop you’ll be making a rectangular shaped basket, just like a traditional market basket as it was made in New Jersey. Complete with an oak bonnet, a wooden picnic lid and oak runners on the bottom “if you please.” Material fee is $40 for the completed basket, plus $10 for runners and $30 for a removable hardwood picnic lid, payable to the instructor the day of the class. Pre-registration is required by February 1, 2016.

Join Geri Pagliaro of the Seaport Stitchers for this two day fiber art class. Learn to design a quilted beach scene; this wall art is based on a pattern by Karen Eckmeier. You’ll learn the skills of fabric color selection, free motion quilting, and embellishment. This class is great for novice quilters and fabric designers. The pattern and all fabric are included but please bring a basic sewing kit and sewing machine in good working order. Questions are welcomed, and pre-registration is required by January 30, 2016.

The lore of spear fishing has been passed on from the North American natives to the European immigrants of the New World. Now highly sought after by collectors, ice fishing decoys are priced out of range for the average collector. Now you have the opportunity to create your own piece of American folk art. In this two day course, woodcarving artist Mark Bair will take you through the rich history, tools, and materials used so that you can create your very own piece of American folk art. All materials and tools are included but experienced carvers are invited to bring their own tools. Pre-registration is required by March 12, 2016.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Take advantage of those April showers with your own rain barrel for your home! Rain barrels collect storm water for reuse in gardens and on native landscaping. This basket is beautiful for your table or your wall- a real show off! Join Mary May to make a beautiful Shaker-style cheese basket, 12” in diameter and 4” high. The large hexagonal weave was used for draining cheese curds, but today it can serve a variety of purposes or as a beautiful decorative piece. Materials fee of $30 is payable to instructor the day of the class. Pre-registration is required by May 14, 2016.

Mary says, “This is one of my first baskets, and my most used one, too!” This handy tote will carry your daily needs from here to there! This basket is 13” long, 5” wide, and 8” high, and is finished with Shaker tape handles. Materials fee of $40 is payable to instructor the day of the class. Join Mary May to make a traditional woven eel basket. Learn the history of these local baskets, and then weave your own in one of two sizes. Complete your basket with a Jersey White Cedar plug. The two sizes include the original 30” size or the 16” bait size. Materials fee of $62 for the 30” basket or $40 for the 16” basket are payable to the instructor the day of the class. Pre-registration is required by October 1, 2016.

“Just Your Size” Traditional Market Basket Workshop

Mary May will teach your to make this classic market basket, local to the South Jersey area, in your choice of three sizes and different handle shapes! Sizes include: Large which is 15” long, 7” wide, and 7” high, Medium which is 13” long, 7” wide, and 6.5” high, and small which is 11” long, 5” wide, and 6” high. Materials fee of $45 for large, $40 for medium, and $35 for small basket payable to instructor the day of the class. Runners will also be offered the day of the class, for an additional fee. Please choose basket size when signing up for class. Pre-registration is required by November 5, 2016.

In this two day class students will be lead through the process of making a series of Christmas cards. Using the old world technique of wood block printing, instructor Mark Bair will guide you through the process of designing, cutting the block, and printing a series of 12 holiday images of your choice. After the images have been printed you will learn how to mount them on cards, which you can personalize and give to family and friends as a holiday keepsake. Beginner and experienced students are all welcome. The materials and tools will be provided by the instructor; however students are encouraged to bring their own images.

We’ve put our heads together to come up with this exciting basket for Super Bowl Sunday, join Mary May for this popular yearly tradition! We’ll be making a tall wall basket that looks like an archer’s quiver, great for hanging on a door, a wall, or holding wooden utensils in the kitchen. Woven in either twill or continuous weave, this basket is made on a mold and is great for all levels. It’s challenging for those with experience, or can also be a good introductory basket if you haven’t done a lot of weaving. Join the winning team at the Seaport on Super Bowl Sunday! Ice fishing decoys are a very collectible form of folk art. In this two-day class, Mark Bair will take you through all the steps to create your very own vintage-style ice fishing decoy. Topics covered will include: material selection, mechanics of the working decoy, carving techniques, painting, and antiquing. Each student will leave Sunday afternoon with their very own one-of-a-kind piece of folk art. No previous carving experience is necessary.

Join us at Christkindlmarkt to make Mary’s signature basket. Learn about the traditional South Jersey berry basket, and weave a basket on a mold. This class is great for beginners and more experienced weavers. This class is open to all ages, we ask that children under 10 have a parent help.
