This year, the Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show’s featured bird is the wood duck, and that bird’s the subject of a special exhibit in the Hunting Shanty as well! Also known as a Tree Duck, Woodie, Wood Widgeon, or Carolina Duck, they are a popular game bird that are also a popular subject for both decoy carvers and decoy collectors alike. An excellent subject for the carver’s knife and a great way for them to show off their skill with the paintbrush, these stunning ducks are one of the most colorful to grace the Atlantic Flyway.
The New Jersey Decoy Collector’s Association coordinates several changing exhibits a year in the Hunting Shanty, with decoys from members collections. A member of both the Seaport Board of Trustees and the NJDCA, Grove Conrad coordinated this exhibit which includes birds from the collections of NJDCA members, the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum, and featured artists themselves. Carvers in the exhibit include notables of the past and present like Hurley Conklin, Ken Kirby, Fred Reitmeyer, Dick Jessen, and Jay Parker. In addition to seeing some amazing carvings, you’ll also learn some fun facts about the unique Wood Duck in this display.
The exhibit will be running in the Hunting Shanty until March, so be sure to stop by and see it!
